The Benefits of Playing with Your Cat

December 1, 2015

Did you know that playing is good for kitties? In fact, we wholeheartedly recommend that you play with your cat regularly. In this article, a local Tipp City, OH veterinarian lists some great benefits of playing with your cat.

Burn Excess Energy

Kitties, particularly young ones, are basically furry little bundles of zoom. Engaging your cat in fun play sessions will keep Fluffy active, and will burn off some of that excess energy. This will leave your furball slightly tired, and very likely looking for her next napping spot. Tired kitties are much less likely to keep you up playing at night, or pounce on your ankles as you’re walking by. Talk about a win-win!

Stimulate Fluffy’s Inner Huntress

Your cute little pet is a predator at heart. Many of our feline friends’ playful antics mock stalking and hunting behaviors they would use in the wild. We know, chasing catnip mice isn’t much of a challenge. Use interactive toys to stimulate your furball’s hunting instincts and satisfy her need to pounce.

Prevent Boredom

You’d get pretty bored just sitting around all day, wouldn’t you? Cats are no different. Even though Fluffy may spend what seems like a ridiculous amount of time napping, she can’t sleep all the time. Playing will offer your kitty beneficial stimulation, and keep her from getting bored.

Redirect Aggression

Another benefit of regular play sessions is that they can help kitties who sometimes act aggressive by allowing them to channel their anger into a healthy activity. Let Fluffy take her angst out on a little stuffed toy, instead of on you.

Encourage Bonding

Playing with your cat will also strengthen the bond between you. Cats may not think the way we do, but your furball will certainly know that she’s being pampered, and will probably reward you with cuddles, kitty kisses, and purrs, or by using your lap as a napping spot.

Of course, Fluffy isn’t the only one who will benefit from regular play sessions. Playing with your cat is good for you too! It will reduce stress, lower your blood pressure, and most likely leave you with a smile on your face!
