How to Properly Spoil Your Dog

August 1, 2017

Did you know that August 10th is Spoil Your Dog Day? National Dog Day is also right around the corner, and is coming up August 26th. It’s probably safe to say that many of our canine buddies will be getting extra treats this month! However, there are some do’s and don’ts to pampering your pet. Here, a Tipp City, OH vet offers tips on the correct way to spoil Fido.

Training

Does your pooch have a habit of jumping on guests? Does your furry pal ignore you when you call him? No matter how adorable Fido is, at the end of the day, these habits are really just bad doggy manners. Take time to work with your pooch, and teach him better petiquette. You can also enroll your four-legged buddy in a doggy obedience class.

Suitable Treats

Man’s Best Friend is an expert beggar, and knows just how to get us to hand over yummy tidbits. It can be hard to resist those big sad eyes! However, begging is probably one of the main reasons so many of our canine patients are obese or overweight. Ask your vet to recommend safe, suitable treats.

Veterinary Care

We know, visiting us isn’t Fido’s favorite thing to do, but it’s in his own best interests. Proper veterinary care is very important to your pet’s health and well-being. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Toys/Playtime

Toys keep dogs active and entertained, and provide them with beneficial mental stimulation. They also help prevent doggy boredom, which will in turn help keep your canine pal out of mischief. Keep Fido’s toybox full, and take time to play with him daily.

Exercise

Make sure your furry buddy is getting the right amount and type of activity. Most dogs need at least a daily walk. For extra tail wags, take Fido to a doggy park, or let him explore a new trail.

Beauty Treatments

While Fido may not exactly love getting bathed, it’s probably safe to say he enjoys feeling soft and clean afterwards. Nail trims and dental care are also important. Keep up with your pup’s grooming needs!

Love

Love is the secret ingredient in any good pet care routine. Spend time with your canine companion, and don’t skimp on those ear scritches or belly rubs!
