Summer is here! Our canine pals love this time of year. However, hot weather can be dangerous for dogs. Read on as a Tipp City, OH vet offers some tips on keeping Fido cool and comfy as the Dog Days of summer approach.
Many dogs love going swimming. If your pup loves the water, indulge him! Just be sure to put safety first. Supervise Fido closely, and keep him out of dangerous areas. Also, check with your vet first, as swimming isn’t right for every dog. If swimming is a no-go for your furry best friend, don’t worry. Fido can still have fun splashing around in a kiddie pool or playing in the spray from a sprinkler.
Pet fountains have tails wagging all over the country. There are now some that turn on when Fido steps on a pad. We probably don’t have to tell you how adorable this is to watch!
Making sure your pup always has fresh, clean water is very important! If you have more than one dog, you’ll want multiple water stations. You may also want to consider getting an automated water bowl.
Did you know that you can buy cooling pads or cooling jackets for your canine buddy? This is a great way to keep your furry companion cool on sweltering days! You can also put a towel in the freezer, and put it on Fido’s bed.
Your furry pal is part of the family, and should live indoors, in climate-controlled rooms. That said, Fido does enjoy having a yard to patrol and chase squirrels around in. If your pooch has an outdoor area, make sure it offers shade. If you don’t have a doghouse or tree, hang a tarp or blanket up.
If there’s one thing all of our canine patients agree about, it’s a love of snacks. Treat Fido to a cold treat by buying or making him some doggy ice cream. Pupsicles are also pretty popular with our four-legged buddies. Put dog treats, chew sticks, kibble, bacon bits, and/or shredded meat in ice cube trays or waxed paper cups. Then, pour water or broth over them and freeze overnight. Instant tail wags!
