Reasons To Adopt A Specially-Abled Pet

May 1, 2020

There’s a very, very special pet holiday around the corner. May 3 rd is Adopt A Specially-Abled Pet Day! Just like people, pets are often afflicted with medical issues. These can range from vision and hearing impairments, missing or amputated limbs, or even partial paralyzation. Pets are very resilient, and can often do just fine with these challenges. However, they often face very stiff odds when it comes to getting adopted. This is very sad, because they make wonderful pets! A Tipp City, OH vet lists some reasons to consider adopting a specially-abled pet below.

They Need Love Too

Specially-abled pets are often very loving and loyal. They are also often extremely grateful and appreciative to those who show them love and care! Giving one of these wonderful animals a second chance at happiness is a truly beautiful act of compassion, and something you can really feel great about.

They’re Easier Than You Think

One reason that many people shy away from adopting specially-abled pets is that they are concerned that these pets require much more time, money, and care than other animals. This isn’t necessarily the case. Many people report that caring for their specially-abled friends is comparable to taking care of a young child. For instance, if you have a blind dog, you may need to block stairs off with baby gates, set out carpet runners, and put doggy bumpers on sharp corners. A deaf dog can learn to respond to flashlights and/or hand signals, instead of vocal commands. That’s not so hard! In any case, it never hurts to ask.

They Don’t Know They’re Special

Have you ever seen a video of a three-legged dog hard at play? Fido can have just as much fun as his four-legged pals. Even dogs in wheelchairs love getting out and about, just like any other pooch. Pets don’t necessarily know—or care—that they’re a bit different from other dogs and cats. They’re too busy having fun!

They’re Adorable!

We know, this one probably goes without saying. All pets are cute! However, specially-abled pets are often extra charming. In fact, many of them are chock full of charisma and personality. Purrs, cuddles, and tail wags from these guys are always truly precious!
