Cattitude

September 1, 2020

Does your cat sometimes seem to get irritated or angry for no reason? Fluffy can be a bit temperamental, and she can have a rather short temper. Why do our feline pals go from cuddly little furballs to hissing balls of rage so quickly? How do you deal with a grumpy kitty? A local Tipp City, OH vet offers some clues on this below.

 Play

One of the many things that are unique about our feline buddies is the fact that they sometimes like to attack us just for fun. This may be cute with kittens, but it can be quite dangerous with older cats. If your furball seems to think of you as a giant toy, address that issue right away. The next time your furry friend attacks, tell her to play nice. You can also say ‘Don’t bite’ or any other phrase. Just say the same thing each time. If that doesn’t work, blow in your kitty’s face, clap your hands, or squirt her with water. She’ll get the hint sooner or later!

Fear

Our feline pals sometimes also lash out when they feel frightened or threatened. This is not uncommon in kitties that were born feral and/or have been rescued from bad situations. Never force attention on Fluffy, and don’t pick her up if she doesn’t want to be held. Take care not to corner her, either. That may trigger your feisty furball’s fight or flight response, which can cause her to attack.

Aggression

Our feline buddies can become aggressive for many reasons. Mama cats tend to be very protective of their kittens. Fluffy may also become aggressive if there is another pet—especially a new kitty—around. Jealousy is another potential trigger. Try to figure out what is setting your pet off. Also, make sure your furry pal has something to take her frustrations out on. Give her lots of toys, and let her take her angst out on a catnip toy instead of your ankle.

Sudden Changes

If Fluffy is normally sweet, but has recently started acting grouchy, there may be something going on with her. Just like people, kitties often get grumpy when they don’t feel well. Have your feline buddy checked out by a vet.
