8 Ways to Celebrate Pet Bird Day

September has gone to the birds: the 10th is Pet Bird Day! If you have a feathered buddy, be sure to pay Polly some extra attention on her special day. A Tipp City, OH vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Nothing will brighten up a bird’s day like a new toy. You can of course buy your colorful pal’s playthings, but you can also make her something. Here’s an easy option: get a piece of twine, and make Polly a fun hanging toy. You can string popcorn, playing cards, waxed paper cups, popsicle sticks, poker chips, bottlecaps, beads, and/or plastic shower curtain rings. Just avoid anything that could be dangerous, such as small or sharp objects. Ask your vet for more information.

Photo Session

Birds are super cute, but it can be tricky taking photos of them. Try snapping Polly from her eye level, if you can. You may also want to check and see if your camera or phone has a macro setting.

Dance Party

Does your winged buddy like to boogie down? Many birds do enjoy dancing. This is not only really fun for Polly, it’s also super cute to watch! Play something with a great beat, and see if your pet reacts.

Many of our feathered friends talk, or at least mimic sounds. Try teaching Polly a new phrase, or giving her a new noise to mimic.

A special snack is definitely in order! Some good options are diced papaya, cooked beans, cherries, oranges, pumpkin seeds, grapes, sweet potatoes, pine nuts, and brown rice. Of course, every bird is different. Ask your vet for specific advice on safe and unsafe foods.

There are many wonderful organizations that are dedicated to helping birds, either wild or domesticated, or both. Consider making a donation to one of them, or even volunteering. If that isn’t feasible for you, just share some posts or information on social media. Every little bit helps!

Cage Upgrade

Could your little buddy use a bigger cage? This is a perfect time for an upgrade!

Birds are small, but they really do make fun, loyal companions. Spend some quality time with Polly, and make sure that she feels loved and safe!
