Hug Your Hound Day

September 1, 2021

Hug Your Hound Day is September 12th! Of course, if it were up to Fido, he may insist that every day should be Hug Your Hound Day, and he wouldn’t be wrong! Here, a Tipp City, OH vet discusses—you guessed it—hugging hounds.

Why Hug Hounds

There’s almost no end to the reasons that Fido deserves lots of hugs, as well as toys, treats, and attention. Our canine companions are extremely loyal and loving, and offer their humans unwavering, unconditional friendship. Man’s Best Friend has been by our side for almost 30,000 years! In that time, they have hunted with us, protected us and our homes and cattle, gone to war with us, carried our messages, and, of course, offered cuddles and consolation when we’re down. Your pooch doesn’t care what you make or where you work: he just wants to hang out!

Affectionate Dogs

Dogs have some pretty adorable ways of showing affection, aside from hugs. The tail wag, of course, may very well be the cutest and most iconic. Fido will also show his loyalty in his demeanor around you. That happy dance pups do when their humans get home is always super cute!

Celebrating

There are lots of great ways to celebrate this special day. Treats will always get Fido’s cute tail going. Your pooch may also appreciate a new toy, a fun trip to the park, or even a new bed! Those of you with kids may want to set aside time for a fun photo shoot with the family dog. Your canine buddy probably also wouldn’t mind a trip to the park. Some belly rubs and ear scritches are also in order.

Cautions

Hugging hounds is great, but there are some situations when it’s not the best move. You should never hug a strange pooch, or one that seems scared or uneasy. Your own pet may enjoy cuddling and snuggling with you, and there certainly are lots of canines that just want attention and affection. However, hugs don’t necessarily translate into affection in dog language. In fact, they can be interpreted as a sign of dominance. Needless to say, that’s not a signal you want to put out to a dog you’ve just met.
