Helping Your Cat Settle In

September 15, 2021

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! While we think that kitties should always be happy and healthy, this is a purrfect chance to talk about what they really need to be content. A great cat care regimen should really start on the day you bring your feline pal home! Read on as a local Tipp City, OH vet offers some advice on helping Fluffy get settled.

Kitty Requisites

Make sure that you have everything your feline overlord requires ready and waiting for her when you bring her home. Your shopping list should include food, dishes, toys, treats, a litterbox and litter, and a carrier. Cat furniture is optional, though we do recommend getting Fluffy at least one comfy bed.

Coming Home

What you do next depends very much on whether or not you have other pets. If Fluffy is an only pet, you can let her settle in and explore as she pleases. If you do have other animal companions, you’ll need to keep them in separate rooms at first. Make introductions slowly and carefully, and don’t let your furry buddies meet face-to-face until they’ve accepted the fact that there’s another pet in town.

Kittyproofing

Cats are both curious and playful, so you’ll need to do some petproofing to keep your furry pal safe. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous. This includes things like toxic plants, wires and cords, plastic bags, chemicals, medicine, and any small or sharp objects. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Meet The Doctor

Speaking of vets, one of the first things you’ll want to do is take Fluffy to the clinic. If she hasn’t been fixed or microchipped yet, those things should definitely go on the agenda. A thorough exam is also in order. Plus, you’ll need to get your feline friend caught up on any vaccines or parasite control products she needs.

Purrs

Kitties may be small, but they are very emotional, and can easily be frightened. Never force attention on your new pet … no matter how cute you think she is. Toys, treats, catnip, conversation, and play sessions will help earn Fluffy’s trust. With love, patience, and good TLC, you’ll have that engine going before you know it!
