Did you know that World Spay Day is February 22? This is a very important topic for anyone who is concerned about animal welfare. If your feline buddy hasn’t been fixed yet, we strongly urge that you see to this as soon as possible. In this article, a Tipp City, OH vet lists a few reasons to make that appointment.
Control Pet Overpopulation
The biggest reason we urge people to spay their pets is to help control pet overpopulation. A single pair of kitties can have 2, 072, 514 descendants in just nine years! With so many homeless pets already out there fending for themselves, it’s just the more responsible thing to do.
Health Benefits
There are some very distinct health benefits to having your kitty spayed. The procedure reduces the risk of mammary tumors, or breast cancer. Fluffy will also have reduced or eliminated risks of certain cancers and uterine infections. Ask your vet for more information.
Greater Life Expectancy
Did you know that cats that have been spayed have longer life expectancy than kitties who weren’t? There are a few possible causes for this. One would be the lowered risk of health issues, as mentioned above. Giving birth can also be hard on Fluffy, which would be another factor. Finally, kitties that have been fixed aren’t as likely to run off looking for love. That in turns mean they aren’t as likely to get lost, injured, or killed.
Calmer Kitty
Another reason that it’s beneficial to get Fluffy fixed? She’ll be much calmer after. Your furry pal won’t be as interested in trying to run out, and she’ll likely be friendlier and less prone to aggression. (In boy cats, this also reduces the urge to spray, though males are of course neutered instead of being spayed.)
No Singing
Animals that have not been fixed experience very strong hormonal urges and become very driven by the urge to find a mate and procreate. Fluffy has a habit of advertising her single status by singing love songs. Spoiler: our feline pals are terrible singers. Trust us, you’ll be doing your future self (and your neighbors) a favor by taking your pet’s urge to belt out kitty love songs out of the picture.
