5 Astonishing Facts About Fido

May 16, 2022
World Dog Day is coming up on May 21st! We’re always happy to shine the spotlight on our canine companions, and celebrate how wonderful they are. Fido is a truly remarkable friend and companion! Here, a Tipp City, OH vet lists some things you may not have known about Man’s Best Friend.

The Nose Knows

It’s common knowledge that Fido’s adorable little snoot is very, very astute. However, it may surprise you to learn just how powerful your furry buddy’s nose is. Our four-legged friends can smell things in miniscule amounts. Some comparisons? Fido could smell one bad apple in a barrel of two million apples, or a half-teaspoon of sugar in an Olympic swimming pool. To look at this a bit differently, our canine buddies’ sense of smell can be anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 stronger than ours. Wow!

Doggy Intelligence

To be fair, dogs are kind of all over the place with this one. Some of our furry pals can understand very specific commands, and perform complex tasks. Others? Not so much. As it turns out, the average pooch has about the same intelligence as a toddler. The smartest dogs can learn about 165 words, signals, or gestures. As for the pups on the lower end of the intelligence scale? They’re also very cute and lovable, and we adore them too!

Fido’s Vision

You may have heard that Fido can only see in black and white. That’s not entirely correct. Our furry friends aren’t exactly colorblind, as was previously thought. They can see colors: the hues and shades just don’t look as vivid to them.

Longtime Friends

As it turns out, Man’s Best Friend has been standing by our sides for much longer than was originally thought. Fido may have been our buddy for as long as 33,000 years. That is far earlier than even the oldest artifacts from recorded history!

Loving Friends

It’s always cute to walk in the door and be greeted by that adorable happy dance Fido does when his humans come home. Did you know our canine pals can actually tell time? Fido wouldn’t think of this in terms of hours and minutes, but he does have some sense of when you should be getting home from work.
