September is Pet Insurance Month! Pet insurance hasn’t been around as long as human insurance, but it works in similar ways, and provides many of the same benefits. In a nutshell, the concept is the same: customers pay a set monthly or annual fee, and in return are covered for certain costs. There’s quite a bit of confusion when it comes to pet insurance, however. A Tipp City, OH vet lists some common misconceptions below.
Young Pets Don’t Need It
This actually couldn’t be further from the truth. In many ways, young pets need it most. Our animal companions are at their most mischievous when they’re little, which makes them much more prone to certain types of illness or injury. Plus, some insurance plans will cover some or all of the costs of wellness care, which may include things like spay/neuter surgery.
It’s Too Exclusive
While some pet insurance companies will exclude certain things, you may find that more is covered than you think. For example, some do cover senior pets, but many people assume they won’t. Of course, you also don’t want to go by the opposite misconception, and think more things are covered than they actually are. The bottom line here is, well, read the bottom line, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
It’s A Scam
While some companies are definitely better than others, there’s no denying that having a safety net in place if an emergency arises can be a huge, huge benefit. In fact, it may even save your pet’s life! Even something as mundane as Fido eating your nephew’s baby shoe could result in the need for emergency surgery, which could cost thousands of dollars. Think it over!
Plans Are All The Same
This actually couldn’t be further from the truth. Pet insurance policies vary widely as far as their coverages, deductibles, waiting periods, and almost every other aspect of their policies. Some include preventative care; some don’t. One company may include options for medication, while another may exclude it. And some companies have several different types of plans, so you can customize it to your needs. The main thing is to do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask your vet questions, either. We’re always happy to offer insight!
