Make A Dog’s Day: Treats

October 17, 2022
Make a Dog’s Day is coming up on October 22nd! We think all of our canine friends deserve to be happy, so we’re more than happy to spread the word about this new pet holiday. Of course, when it comes to things that can make a dog’s day, treats are definitely at the top of the list. Fido would probably be more than happy to sample anything in your fridge or cupboard. However, there are a few things to keep in mind here. Read on as a local Tipp City, OH vet offers some information on giving your pooch his snacks.

Store-Bought Goodies

Fido would be more than happy to sample just about anything you can pick up in a store. Try to stick with healthier options. Get into the habit of reading labels. Opt for products that contain mostly meat, fish, or poultry, and have limited amounts of fillers like wheat and corn syrup. Also, choose things that are right for your furry friend’s age, size, health, and lifestyle.

Homemade Treats

Do you enjoy cooking? There’s no reason that you can’t make Fido’s treats. There are plenty of great recipes available online. Just stick with things that are safe for your furry pal. Meat, fish, and poultry are fine, as long as you’ve removed the skin, bones, and fat. You can also add things like natural peanut butter; olive or wheat germ oil; cheese; bacon bits; whole-wheat flour; eggs; bananas; or pureed pumpkin. As to unsafe foods, some of the things to avoid include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocado; pitted fruit; chocolate; alcohol; and xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Too Much Of A Good Thing

There are definite benefits to giving your canine friend treats: they’re great for bonding, training, and, of course, just making Fido’s day. However, you don’t want to go overboard. Treats should only make up about 5 to 10 percent of your pup’s daily caloric intake.

Tricks For Treats

We know that our canine pals really strive to please their humans. Being praised for being a good boy is a great confidence booster for Fido. Have your furry buddy work for his snacks! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns about your dog’s health or care. As your local Tipp City, OH pet hospital, we’re here to help!
