Thanksgiving With Fluffy

November 15, 2022
Turkey Day is just around the corner, and with it, the official start of the holiday rush. As you start working on your Thanksgiving plans, your kitty will be right there with you, ‘supervising’ your preparations. (And, yes, silently judging you.) You’ll need to keep a close eye on Fluffy over the next few weeks. This can be a dangerous holiday for pets! A local Tipp City, OH vet discusses spending Turkey Day with your feline buddy below.

Food

Your furry pal will definitely appreciate a yummy treat. Go ahead and offer her some plain, cooked turkey, without the skin, bones, or fat. Having a different main course? That’s fine! Most types of meat, fish, or poultry are safe for cats. You can also offer Fluffy some canned tuna or chicken, or shredded deli meat. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Guests

There are a few steps you can take to help prevent kitty mishaps. If Fluffy stays indoors—which we always recommend—keep a close eye on her as people are coming or going. Opportunistic furballs may try to dash out an open door. Kittens need extra supervision. Not only do baby cats have a tendency to get underfoot, they can fit into very small spaces.

Cattitude

Not all cats will be happy to find a crowd of hungry visitors in their domain. If your furball is shy and/or aggressive, set her up in a quiet back room with bedding, food, toys, treats, and a litterbox, and let just her sleep through the holiday.

Decorations

Keep Fluffy in mind as you decorate. Anything small or sharp should be kept out of paws’ reach. Candles should also be placed somewhere that your feline friend can’t get to them. Other potential hazards include small and sharp objects, plastic bags and ties, and anything with ropes or cords. Ask your vet for more information.

Gratitude

It’s important to remember the reason for the holiday: gratitude. We have a lot of reasons to be grateful for kitties. In the old days, we were mostly appreciative of Fluffy’s (formidable) mousing skills. Now, we also enjoy her silly antics, charming personality, amusing quirks, and, of course, her love and cuddles. Offer your furball a special gift or treat! Happy Thanksgiving! As your local Tipp City, OH animal clinic, we are very grateful for all of you! Please feel free to contact us anytime.
