7 Purrfect Ways To Keep Your Kitty Hydrated

May 15, 2023

Summer is coming! One of the most important things you can do for your feline buddy in hot weather is to make sure that she is staying properly hydrated. Cats can’t sweat to cool off, so they can easily overheat on sweltering days. In this article, a Tipp City, OH vet offers some advice on making sure that Fluffy is drinking enough water.

Water Bowls

First and foremost, make sure that your furry little friend always has fresh water in her bowl. You can drop an ice cube into it when it’s really hot out. Be sure to change the water daily, as otherwise it may gather dust, bugs, and germs.

Kitty Fountains

Did you know that many cats prefer to drink running water? This makes sense, as in the wild, rivers and streams would be less likely to be contaminated than ponds or puddles. Consider getting Fluffy a pet fountain.

Food Options

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing your furry buddy’s diet. Canned food has more moisture content than kibble does, which may be something to keep in mind. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Extra Stations

Do you have more than one furball? Is your home large and/or multi-storied? If so, you may want to set out extra water stations. If you have more than one floor, keep water bowls on every level. (This is particularly helpful if your pet is a senior.)

Broth

Broth is also good for hydration, because it contains electrolytes. Give your feline pal a small bowl every now and then. Another option is to freeze some into small cubes, and offer Fluffy those. Just check the label to make sure that you’re offering a sodium-free brand.

Cat Milk

Actual milk really isn’t good for kitties, despite popular belief. In fact, many of our feline friends are actually lactose-intolerant. However, you can get Fluffy some cat milk, which you can find online or in pet stores.

Kitty Treats

Ice cream is one of our favorite summer snacks. You can actually find some made just for cats! You can also make Fluffy a yummy treat. Pour tuna juice over shaved ice, or mix ice, wet food, and water in a blender.
