“Your pet needs surgery.”

Just four simple words, yet they can evoke so many emotions. Will my pet be ok? Will he or she suffer at all? Will the surgery go as planned? What will the recovery period be like?

At Troy Animal Hospital and Bird Clinic, we consider ourselves surgical experts. That’s because we deal with surgery on a daily basis. It’s part of our everyday routine. For you and your pet, however, it’s not something that comes up very often. For that reason, you probably have a lot of questions and more than a few concerns weighing on your mind. We’d like to set your mind at ease once and for all and make sure that not only is your pet’s procedure a complete success, but an experience that is as worry-free as possible for you both.

We perform a wide range of pet surgeries in our state of the art surgical suite, from routine spays, neuters and declaw procedures to more complex operations, such as tumor removals and orthopedic surgery. Most importantly, we’ll always go above and beyond to make you both feel comfortable and at ease. Our doctors and care team possess years of experience using cutting edge techniques and always adhering to the strictest standards of safety and care. Rest assured that when it comes to surgery, your loved one will be in excellent hands with us!

Pre-Surgical Care

Prior to ever performing a surgical procedure, our doctors always recommend having pre-surgical screening done. These are simple diagnostic tests that help us to identify certain risk factors that may be unique to your particular pet. The more we can prepare and plan ahead for these risks, the less likely they’ll be to cause a problem during your pet’s procedure. This is especially important for animals that are older or those that suffer from existing medical conditions.

Once we’ve got the green light to proceed with surgery, we’ll get to work developing a customized pain management plan for your pet. Keeping our patients as comfortable and pain-free as possible, while also minimizing risk at every turn, is something we pride ourselves in at Troy Animal Hospital and Bird Clinic. That’s why we only use the safest and most effective anesthetic products available on the market.

Surgery Day

The day of your pet’s surgery, we will welcome you both and help your pet get settled in and comfortable. A big part of our surgical process is helping our patients feel calm and at ease, whether that means taking some extra time to pat them, offering cozy blankets to cuddle with or just speaking soothingly to them. When it’s time for surgery, we will carefully administer the pain medication which will relax your pet and allow them to drift gently into safe sedation.

In the surgical suite, the doctor will get to work, diligently and precisely handling your pet’s procedure with great care. Our experienced care team, including highly trained technicians and veterinary assistants, will remain on hand at all times to assist the doctor and to closely monitor your pet’s wellbeing, from start to finish. We work hard to keep our surgeries efficient so that we minimize the amount of time your pet will be under anesthesia.

Some of the surgeries we regularly perform in-house include:

  • General Surgery
  • Soft Tissue Surgery
  • Oral Surgery
  • Laser Surgery
  • Orthopedic Procedures

Post-Surgical Care

Your pet’s recovery will begin in our safe and comfortable hospitalization ward, where he or she will be carefully relocated once surgery is complete. Our care team will continue to monitor your loved one as he or she begins to awake from anesthesia, and will provide comfort and care to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible. A member of our support staff will give you a call to explain how the surgery went and arrange a time for you to come pick up your pet.

Once you arrive, we will take a few moments to go over our post-surgical care instructions, which will also include a plan for pain management. Our goal is to help your loved one recover as quickly and painlessly as possible. Should any questions or concerns arise after returning home with your pet, we are always available to take your call, answer your questions, discuss your concerns and set your mind at ease.
