Tips for Raising a Polite Dog

September 1, 2018

Have you recently adopted a puppy? Congratulations! Fido’s first year is a very important one. Getting a puppy is lots of fun, but it’s also hard work. It’s important for you to guide your dog’s development, and help him grow into a friendly, well-mannered dog. In this article, a Tipp City, OH vet discusses raising a polite pooch.

Socialization

Socialization is absolutely crucial for puppies. Socializing means exposing little Fido to lots of friendly people and dogs, and letting him experience new places and faces. If your pet forms a good impression of the world as a puppy, he’ll be much calmer and happier about new experiences. In fact, dogs that haven’t been properly socialized have much higher odds of developing behavioral issues, such as aggression. Ask your vet for more information.

Proper Training

All dogs should know basic commands, such as Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . Housebreaking and crate training are also crucial. Your canine buddy’s ‘petucation’ should start right away.

Be Consistent

One mistake many people make when training dogs is being inconsistent. Don’t reprimand Fido for begging one day, and then share your cheeseburger with him the next. It’s also important to use the same phrasing each time. Telling your pooch to ‘Lay Down’ one time and then another day saying ‘Fido, go lay down right now’ will just confuse him.

Stay Positive

Dogs are very cute, but they aren’t perfect. Fido has some bad habits, like chewing and digging inappropriately. Never punish your pet for misbehaving, however, especially after the fact. Your furry pal doesn’t really understand punishment, so you may just end up making him feel scared or confused. It’s fine to tell your pup ‘No’ or ‘Bad dog!’ if you catch him doing something wrong. Otherwise, focus on rewarding good behavior.

Tail Wags

Simple TLC will go a long way towards helping Fido to grow into a sweet, polite dog. Make sure your canine friend is getting good food, suitable exercise, and regular veterinary care. Give the little guy plenty of fun toys, and play with him daily. To keep that furry tail going, pay lots of attention to your puppy. Spend quality time with him daily, and offer him treats, belly rubs, and ear scritches.
