There’s a pretty special kitty holiday coming up: April 6th is Siamese Cat Appreciation Day. We love all of our feline friends, but we do have to admit that Siamese kitties are purrticularly cute and lovable. A local Tipp City, OH vet offers some information on Fluffy in this article.
History
As the name suggests, Siamese cats are originally from modern-day Thailand, which was once known as Siam. They first went to Europe in the 1800’s, when the King of Siam offered two kitties—named Pho and Mia—as gifts to a British general. Fluffy reached America in a similar manner, as a gift to then-President Rutherford Hayes. Although it didn’t take them long to charm us, Siamese kitties were somewhat rare here until after World War II.
Legends
Fluffy has been the subject of some interesting myths. As legend has it, Siamese cats were the official feline companions of the King of Siam. The cats would be perched on tall columns, and would jump and scratch anyone who threatened the king. They were also charged with guarding a special vase, a duty they took very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that their eyes crossed from staring at it so intently,
Siamese cats are full of purrsonality. These kitties are quite vocal: their voices often sound like those of human infants. Fluffy is also very sociable. She gets extremely attached to her humans, and will need lots of attention and lap time. (Tip: If your furball will be left alone a lot, get her a buddy.) It’s also worth noting that Siamese cats love heights. We definitely recommend getting your furry buddy a good cat tower to look adorable on!
Famous Fans
Fluffy can count several famous people among her most loyal fans. That list includes QUeen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II, US President Rutherford B. Hayes, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Syd Barrett, Andy Warhol, and The Monkees’ Davy Jones.
Every breed has some unique traits, and the Siamese is no different. For instance, they can be picky eaters. You may need to experiment to find something your feline overlord actually likes. Once your furry friend reaches her senior years, you’ll want to be on the lookout for eye problems. Ask your vet for specific care tips.
